The crash of the Heinkel just off Margate would be one of many during the coming months and years but being one of the first, memories of its arrival are vivid:

Colin Cuthbert

We were on the cliff top looking out to sea when with a rush of wind, the He 111 came almost over our heads, missing a very large flagpole, over the cliffs and flopped into the water. We ran down a gap, split up by some 25 yards and very quickly dug two holes and pointed our .303s in the right direction.

A searchlight about a mile away clicked on and for the first time we saw the plane with water up to its wings with a big swastika on the tail. We really thought this was it! The Germans inflated their dinghy and paddled in silence to about 10 yards from the water’s edge where they all put their hands up (still in silence) and sat there bobbing up and down.

I decided to show myself and shouted to Roy Ovenden to cover me. I waded in and pulled them to the shore. They got out and we searched them for weapons. They were all young and very cool, obviously thinking that they would only be prisoners for a short time. One of them combed his hair and a lot of jabbering went on – we couldn’t understand German and they couldn’t understand English.

One of them, after a time, put his hand on an under arm holster and handed in another gun. They then let us know that there was another crew member who had parachuted out. I then swam to the plane and found the missing crew member (dead) whose parachute had gone one side of the tail fin and he had gone the other. He had been strangled by the parachute cords.
